For very many occupations in Ireland - nurse, surgeon, teacher, lecturer, occupational therapist, postman, - the employers are almost exclusively public sector/semi-state. Therefore there is no choice if one wants to work in Ireland in these occupations other than to look for a job in the public sector. There are some exceptions e.g. pharmacist, engineer, civil servants, but these are in the minority of the 300k public servants in Ireland. Having worked in both sectors it is my view that those who who had a choice e.g. civil servants, HSE admin staff, would be very much less risk-averse than the average. Laziness develops as a matter of course when there is no penalty for any underperformance.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8817171247555815363.post-84376434580350707202013-09-06T17:18:11.069+01:002013-09-06T17:18:11.069+01:00Another good reference point, I think, is 'Thi...Another good reference point, I think, is 'This Town', by Mark Leibovich. Bill Moyers did a very good interview. Leibovich suggests that when something goes wrong, there is a lot of money to be made in this town.

http://video.pbs.org/video/2365068485/
Brian O' Hanlonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09185216066875647495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8817171247555815363.post-50659463025546262052013-09-06T17:13:26.436+01:002013-09-06T17:13:26.436+01:00Public service. Unsung hero's and hidden devils I would imagine, as in any sector.

I liked the line from the end of the movie, 'The Lives of Others'.

Would you liked it wrapped?

"No. This one's for me".Brian O' Hanlonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09185216066875647495noreply@blogger.com
